In that ongoing series, Doormen on Film, a cheesy, but enjoyable one off cheapie, The Phantom of 42nd Street, has a full-on Broadway doorman who sits at desk next to bunch of mailboxes.

It's awesome.

Watching the Charlie Chaplin Limelight and Buster Keaton mentions the doorman tell him that it's just like old times. We don't actually see the doorman, but hey, it's worth a mention!

In my continuing series, Doormen on Film, the movie Man of a Thousand Faces very briefly features a doorman. On a side note, I love James Cagney. He's a great actor.

The Jazz Singer has what seems to me to be a doorman -- with a chorus girl sitting on his desk. Er. The chorus boys never sit on my desk. Not that I have a desk. Or chorus boys for that matter.

But still!

I've noticed that theatrical doormen seem to appear way more often in British films than American ones...that noted, I found another doorman (or stagedoor keeper as they call him in the film) -- in The Lodger -- not the original silent film, but the 1944 remake. I'm watching The Red Shoes, which not only accurately depicts the backstage feel of theatre, but also has the greatest screen doorman of all time. He may not have a big role, but George the Doorman (or George the Stagedoor Keeper as he's inaccurately referred to on the IMDB) is a true to life real doorman. SO COOL ( Read more... )
